One object worth going to see
This blue whale washed ashore near the mouth of the Vasse River in 1897. Its skeleton took years to prepare; even the skull weighs more than 800 kilograms. Today it hangs in a lunge-feeding pose through the old Hackett Hall.
Begin beneath the head and ribs to feel the scale, then look again from the upper level, where the curve of the spine and jaw reads as one complete animal.

Aviation museum
At Bull Creek, the Aviation Heritage Museum gives you room to get close to full-sized aircraft and to follow the people and engineering behind them. The hangars can get hot. The operator sometimes changes hours in extreme weather, so a summer visit is worth checking on the day.
WA Shipwrecks Museum is a Fremantle maritime archaeology museum in the historic Commissariat buildings, focused on Western Australia's shipwrecks, coastal encounters, trade and conservation work.
Motor museum
The Motor Museum sits inside Whiteman Park and brings together cars, motorcycles and road stories from very different decades. It is easy to make a longer park outing of it, but the museum has its own admission and opening hours. The park's general hours are not the museum's ticket hours.
Museum
The Nostalgia Box in West Perth is a video game console museum with a playable section. You can trace how home games changed and then try some older systems yourself. Opening hours change during school holidays, so use the correct schedule when booking.
Military museum
The Army Museum sits inside Fremantle's Artillery Barracks. It follows the experience of soldiers and civilians connected with Western Australia through several conflicts and through peacetime service. This is an active Defence site with specific entry rules, so check those before setting out with a group.
The Museum of Perth looks at how the city has changed through its people, buildings and streets. It now occupies the old telephone exchange building on Murray Street. Older guides may give its former Atlas Building address; use the museum's current directions instead.
Heritage attraction
High above Fremantle's Bathers Beach, the Round House is easy to treat as a lookout. It was built as a colonial gaol. The building and the ground around it speak to the early colonial administration on Whadjuk land, as well as to the port that grew around it.
Historic house
Samson House at Walyalup is an 1888 Fremantle home associated with Michael Samson and later his children Fred and Rita. Its interiors and collections make it more than a view of an old facade. As checked 25 September 2026, the National Trust says the house is closed to the public until further notice for urgent conservation work.
Museum
Royal Perth Hospital Museum is in the hospital's older Murray Street precinct, not in a general admissions foyer. Its objects follow care, illness, medical research and the people who worked there. The museum is free and has a short midweek opening; a hospital's general visitor hours are not the museum's hours.
Heritage attraction
Perth's Old Central Fire Station has a second life as the DFES Education and Heritage Centre. Come for historic fire engines and emergency-services stories, then check the centre's current session before you take a child into the city expecting it to be open.
Local history museum
If you are tracing a Perth address, business, building or family, the City of Perth History Centre is a useful starting point. The City's current listing says the centre is closed to public visits. Its staff still accept enquiries by email or telephone. Do not follow an old “museum open today” listing into the library expecting to browse the centre in person.
Museum
The WA Police Museum is in transition. The WA Police Force says part of its collection is currently displayed at 57 Lincoln Street, Highgate, by appointment only on Tuesdays and Fridays . A proposed full museum at the East Perth Lockup is still a redevelopment project, not an open visitor attraction. Arrange a visit before travelling.
Specialist museum
MOPA, formerly the Museum of Performing Arts, holds stories of Western Australian theatre in His Majesty's Theatre. It is not a freestanding museum with a large gallery open all day. The collection is partly online and partly displayed around a working theatre; a short tour is the practical way to see some of it.
Subiaco Museum follows the suburb through the things residents used, kept and donated. It is a small, free local collection beside Subiaco Library. Weekday appointments and public opening hours differ, which matters if you are planning a Monday research stop.
Local history museum
Claremont Museum is a small local history stop in a former police station on Victoria Avenue. Its collection deals with Claremont and Freshwater Bay rather than Perth as a whole. Sunday visits are possible only on particular dates, and parts of the museum may be used for school activities during term.
Wanneroo Regional Museum tells the area's changing story from its base inside the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre. It is a different visit from Cockman House or Buckingham House, two heritage homes also associated with the City. The museum has weekday and Saturday hours but no ordinary Sunday opening.
Local history museum
Kalamunda History Village gathers former railway, school, cottage and work buildings around the old Upper Darling Range railway site. It is a place to follow how hills residents travelled, worked and lived, rather than a single preserved home. Opening hours vary by weekday and the last admission is before closing.
Historic house
South Perth Heritage House is the former road board and council office in the Mends Street heritage precinct. It is now associated with the City of South Perth Historical Society. This is not the similarly named restaurant, and it is not the Old Mill on the riverbank.
Cockman House is a family home completed in 1860 and now cared for by the City of Wanneroo. The visit is part house museum, part local story: three generations lived here, and the City has added games, audio and a story-trail app for visitors of different ages.
Transport museum
The Tractor Museum at Whiteman Park keeps WA's agricultural machines and the work around them in view. Volunteers also run a tractor parade on some second Sundays, weather permitting. Its website still shows an old August 2026 “next parade” date, so check a current event notice before travelling solely to hear an engine start.
Revolutions at Whiteman Park tells a broader story than a collection of cars. It asks how people moved through Western Australia and how land transport changed work, settlement and daily life. The museum holds part of Lew Whiteman's collection and has several interactive displays, although historic vehicles are not all accessible inside.
Historic house
Peninsula Farm at Wu-rut Woorat sits beside the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) in Maylands. The surviving house is often called Tranby House after the ship that brought its farming family to the colony. A riverside café and the heritage house occupy the same broader site, but they have separate trading hours and entry rules.
Heritage attraction
The No 1 Pump Station at Minderinjy explains a problem central to the history of the Goldfields: how to move enough water hundreds of kilometres inland. It stands below Mundaring Weir on Whadjuk Nyoongar Country, in the area the National Trust calls Minderinjy.
Historic house
Woodbridge at Mandoon is a two-storey riverside house in Woodbridge, near Guildford. It tells the Harper family's story alongside earlier Whadjuk Nyoongar connection to Mandoon and the later uses that almost cost the building its future.
Heritage attraction
East Perth Cemeteries is a rare surviving record of Perth's early colonial life, but it is also a burial ground. Go to read individual lives and the wider history with care. The National Trust calls this place Martellup on Whadjuk Nyoongar Country.
