Free entry can still make a good full day. The trick is to separate the place you can enter without a ticket from the optional rides, hire, parking and food around it.
| Activity | What is free | What can cost extra |
|---|---|---|
| Rio Tinto Naturescape, Kings Park | Entry to the nature-play space | Transport, food |
| WA Shipwrecks Museum | General admission | Some special exhibitions |
| Art Gallery of WA | General admission | Some ticketed exhibitions or activities |
| Whiteman Park | Entry to park grounds | Tram and wildlife park |
| Lake Leschenaultia | Entry to the lake reserve | Canoe hire and other extras |
| Giants of Mandurah | Outdoor sculpture trail | Transport and paid nearby activities |

Nature play and open space
Rio Tinto Naturescape in Kings Park is a free outdoor play space. It closes on Mondays, public holidays and in all of February; heat, fire and weather notices can also close it. Check park notices on the day. Its water play is for wading, not swimming. Another easy picnic choice is Whiteman Park. The park is free to enter, while the tram and Caversham Wildlife Park have their own charges.
Lake Leschenaultia is a free-entry hills trip with picnic lawns. It has no lifeguards and safety or fire restrictions can change access. For a city play break, a family beach can be free, although pools, paid parking and equipment hire may not be.
A dry-weather backup that costs nothing to enter
WA Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle offers free general admission and a chance to slow the day down indoors; special exhibition charges should be checked separately. The Art Gallery of WA offers free general admission in Perth Cultural Centre, with some paid exhibitions or experiences. Ask the child to pick an object or artwork and tell you what they notice, without turning the outing into a lecture. WA Museum Boola Bardip is a different museum with general admission ticketing, so budget for that separately.
A free outdoor trail
The Giants of Mandurah can be seen on a free outdoor trail. Get the official trail guidance before starting and choose just one or two sculptures if travelling with small children. The drive and the walk between them are separate parts of the day.
Opening hours, temporary exhibitions and fire restrictions change. Check the official pages shortly before leaving and pack a no-cost fallback if your first choice is closed.
