High above Fremantle's Bathers Beach, the Round House is easy to treat as a lookout. It was built as a colonial gaol. The building and the ground around it speak to the early colonial administration on Whadjuk land, as well as to the port that grew around it.

The building and its setting
The City of Fremantle dates its opening to January 1831 and describes it as Western Australia's oldest surviving public building. A gaol was among the colony's first substantial public structures. The nearby tunnel was cut later for the whaling trade. Read the site in that order: Country and coast, then the gaol and colonial control, then the changing harbour and visitor precinct. How to visit
The Fremantle Volunteer Heritage Guides list opening 10.30am to 3.30pm except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Volunteers also describe the 1pm time ball and cannon re-enactment. These events depend on current conditions, staffing and safety, so do not promise a cannon firing as part of every visit. Booking to participate in a firing is a separate arrangement with the guides.
Approach from the West End and allow time for steps and changes in level around Arthur Head. If step-free access is essential, ask the guides about the current route before setting out; a view from the lower path is different from going into the historic cells.
