What survives here

The National Trust records a general burial ground from 1829, followed by cemeteries serving several denominations and a section for people convicted of offences. The eight cemetery areas stopped receiving burials by 1899. Gravestones and their absence both tell a story: some burials have no surviving marker, and a family name on stone is only a part of the person who lived. The site's setting has changed from the edge of colonial Perth to the middle of East Perth.

A Sunday visit

Volunteer opening is normally Sunday 2pm to 4pm, with tickets booked for a self-guided visit. The volunteers can help with the burial database, but a guided tour is a separately arranged offering, not something to expect with ordinary admission. The cemeteries' visitor page confirms Bronte Street and Sunday access. There may be private or group events with different arrangements; check the operator before arriving.

Wear shoes suitable for an old outdoor site, stay on permitted routes and allow time to read without stepping across graves. If you are seeking a relative, start with the Trust's burial database and ask what information is actually known; a search result is not proof that a visible headstone survives. For mobility or access questions, contact the operator about paths and entry rather than assuming historic ground is level.

For a different East Perth heritage visit on a day other than Sunday, see the Perth historic sites overview and check each property's separate hours. The licensed photograph shows the real cemetery in 2022 and does not establish current conditions.
