The No 1 Pump Station at Minderinjy explains a problem central to the history of the Goldfields: how to move enough water hundreds of kilometres inland. It stands below Mundaring Weir on Whadjuk Nyoongar Country, in the area the National Trust calls Minderinjy.

Why this building matters
The National Trust describes the station as the first of the pumping stations in the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme. The original steam equipment served a pipeline that carried water from the weir towards the eastern goldfields; the scheme opened in 1903. Displays now show the route and the engineering, including pump handles, models and video. The infrastructure story includes politics, workers, water use and the communities at both ends, not simply a single inventor's triumph.
Planning the visit
Volunteers generally open the station on Sundays from noon to 4pm, and on selected public holidays. Admission is ticketed at the site. The Trust states it closes during February and in dangerous weather; restricted access to the weir area may also shut the station. This is not an all-week indoor museum. Check the operator's notice and Emergency WA when fire conditions are an issue, rather than travelling based only on regular hours.
The weir and nearby walking areas are a separate part of the outing. Ask the manager about current public dam-wall access; a pump-station admission is not permission to enter operational water infrastructure. Do not swim in the reservoir. Bring water and sun protection for outdoor sections, and allow time for the history displays before adding a longer bush walk.
The station was closed for chimney conservation in 2023-24; the National Trust announced its reopening in October 2024. That history does not guarantee uninterrupted operation today. For other hills heritage options, compare Woodbridge House and the historic sites guide.
