Rockingham’s sheltered bays and islands give visitors a chance to see wild dolphins south of Perth. You can watch from shore, take a wildlife cruise or book a licensed in-water trip. Those are different experiences with different rules. No guide or boat can promise a dolphin will appear at a set time.
| Your choice | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Shore watch | Free, unstructured and without a sighting guarantee |
| Wildlife cruise | Boat-based viewing; check route and conditions |
| Licensed dolphin swim | Guided entry under the operator’s licence and instructions |

Choose the kind of trip before booking
Mersey Point and the Shoalwater foreshore are useful places to understand the bay, but a shore visit is not a reliable dolphin appointment. The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park also supports seabirds and Australian sea lions. Enjoy whatever is present rather than pursuing an animal along the beach.
A cruise keeps you on the boat. An in-water trip is more demanding and subject to weather, swimming requirements and the operator’s schedule. A Rockingham operator advertises guided wild-dolphin swims; confirm its current licence, minimum age, gear, cancellation policy and what happens if dolphins are not found before paying. Photos of past swims describe possible experiences, not a guaranteed outcome. Bring warm layers for the boat even on a sunny day.
The ordinary rules still matter
DBCA’s dolphin-distance guide states that a person in the water must stay at least 50 metres from a dolphin. A person in charge of a boat, kayak or sailboard must keep the vessel at least 100 metres away. DBCA identifies licensed Rockingham operators that may work closer under monitored conditions. If you independently see dolphins while swimming, snorkelling or paddling, do not swim towards them or treat the tour rules as permission to approach.
Do not feed, circle or chase them. If dolphins approach a vessel, the skipper should follow DBCA guidance rather than making a sudden turn for a photo. Keep children beside you at the water’s edge and respect signs around jetties and boating areas.
Pair the day with the park, not a promise
If no dolphins appear, a Shoalwater park visit still offers coast, birds and views. A Penguin Island visit is separate: DBCA says the island closes seasonally and can shut for dangerous weather or heat. Check the ferry and park alert before setting out.
