Herdsman Lake is a wetland visit close to the city. Birds and open water draw walkers, but the shore is habitat rather than a swimming spot. The whole park is larger than one picnic area, so pick an access point and a realistic walking distance before heading out.

Let the birds set the pace
DBCA describes a regional park with walking routes and a separate Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre. The centre has its own programme and opening arrangements; a free stroll around the reserve does not guarantee that the centre is open. Choose the short approach to the Discovery Centre if your group cannot walk a full loop; check its actual entrance and session first. Bring binoculars if you have them and watch from established paths or hides. Bird sightings vary with season, time of day and water level, which is part of the pleasure of returning.
Keep the wetland healthy
Stay off reed beds and muddy lake margins, avoid feeding birds and give nesting areas space. Some approaches are firmer and more direct than others, so read the park map for your chosen entrance if you need a short or accessible outing. Mosquitoes and sun can be noticeable even on a mild day; carry water and suitable clothing. For another bird-rich urban lake, compare Galup, formerly Lake Monger and its water-use rules.
