Queens Gardens, East Perth

Queens Gardens is an old-style city garden with waterlily ponds, lawns and trees. The Peter Pan statue gives children something to seek out, but the ponds and quieter corners are the reason to stay longer. It is a public garden, distinct from the former Queens Gardens car park discussed in separate city planning news.

See how the old site became a garden

The City of Perth describes ponds left from the site’s former clay workings and a replica of the Peter Pan sculpture in Kensington Gardens, London. The gardens opened in 1899 after earlier uses including a brickworks. Their shape and water are part of that history, not an ornamental detail added to a modern playground. Walk slowly through the lawns and compare the planting around each pond.

Keep the visit simple

Stay on established paths around the water and supervise young children; a pond is not a place to wade or feed birds. The City offers parts of the gardens for booked events, so lawns may be busier than expected on a weekend. If a wedding or maintenance activity limits a path, use a different circuit and follow staff signs. For another historic green space in the CBD, Stirling Gardens has a different story and setting.

Langley Park

Langley Park is the broad strip of lawn between central Perth and the Swan River. Its appeal is simple: room to walk, sit and see the skyline from a low, open space. The size also makes it an event venue, so a quiet day on the grass and a festival day can feel like different places.
