Point Walter’s river edge combines shady grass, a jetty, playgrounds and the striking sandbar visible at lower water. The City of Melville also uses the name Dyoondalup. Choose a picnic or riverside walk independently of the reserve’s mountain-bike trails, and check the current viewing-platform notice before setting out for those structures.

The foreshore has several distinct parts
The City of Melville lists two playgrounds, picnic space, a boat ramp, a jetty and the sandbar. Walking out onto the sandbar depends on tide and river conditions; it is not a fixed dry path or safe crossing. Keep children close and do not step into deeper water on the strength of an old photograph. The Dyoondalup bike park has graded trails; use that area only with suitable equipment and follow its trail signs.
Check the temporary closure and dog ban
The City’s September 2026 notice says the Dyoondalup viewing platforms are closed from 17 August until late September for maintenance. That does not mean the whole foreshore is closed, but do not plan a viewpoint visit without checking the reopening notice and on-site barriers. The City explicitly says dogs are not allowed at Point Walter Reserve. Facilities may be in different parts of this large site, so decide whether you want the foreshore, upper lawn or bike trails before parking.
