Lake Leschenaultia is a popular Hills swimming and picnic area, with sandy edges, shaded lawn and bushland beyond the beach. It can also close quickly in dangerous fire conditions. A visit works best when you check the lake notice on the day and treat the water, bike tracks and camping as separate activities with separate rules.

Choose the activity before packing
The Shire of Mundaring lists swimming, canoeing, bush walks, cycling, picnic areas and camping. Each calls for different equipment, and not every service runs every day. The Shire describes an all-terrain wheelchair option; arrange that in advance rather than arriving assuming it is free. Hire bookings and shelter reservations are distinct from free day entry. Supervise children near the water and follow the Shire’s lake-use rules about swimming and craft.
Check the gate and fire rating
The Shire opens the vehicle gates at 8.30am Monday–Friday and 8am on weekends, normally closing them half an hour after sunset. It warns that high fire danger or other conditions can cause short-notice closures. Look for the current lake notice and Emergency WA information before a long drive. Leave enough time to pack up before the gate closes, and note that the visitor centre has different office hours from the lake itself. Pets are prohibited except registered assistance dogs meeting the Shire’s conditions.
