The Perth Hills offer different sorts of outings, from a grassy lake picnic to a waterfall lookout. Pick one place and its conditions before you set off; a bush trail can feel much longer with a tired child.
| Place | Family plan | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Leschenaultia, Chidlow | Picnic, playground and lake swim | No lifeguards; swim and fire restrictions |
| Lesmurdie Falls | Picnic area and waterfall walks | Track grade, heat and water flow |
| Mundaring Weir | Dam lookout and picnic | Current walkway access; reservoir is not for swimming |
| Araluen Botanic Park | Garden stroll | Paid admission, opening and seasonal displays |

A lake day in Chidlow
Lake Leschenaultia at 2135 Rosedale Road has free entry, a playground, picnic space and a designated swimming area. Boat or canoe hire, when offered, costs extra. The Shire's safety advice says there are no lifeguards; keep small children within arm's reach in the water, do not dive or jump, and obey any swim or bushfire restrictions. Dogs are generally prohibited, apart from registered assistance animals. The day can be a picnic even if swimming conditions rule out getting wet.
A walk with a destination
Lesmurdie Falls has a picnic area and several walking choices. Use the track description and grade before taking a pram or a young walker. The accessibility information covers the car park, toilets and picnic area; it does not promise a step-free route to every waterfall view. Mundaring Weir has a dam wall and nearby outdoor space, but the reservoir is a drinking-water source and not a swim stop.
Araluen Botanic Park is a ticketed garden option at Roleystone. Flowering displays vary with the season and weather; check its current admission and opening rather than promising a particular bloom. Avoid adding too many attractions to one hills day.
Bushfire conditions can change the plan quickly. Read the venue's current notices, bring water, and turn around early if a walk becomes too much. For other nearby outings see family day trips.
Choose the easiest terrain
Lake Leschenaultia has lawns and a shore, but uneven natural edges still need attention. A falls walk adds gradients and conditions that change with recent rain; read the specific trail rather than judging it from a picnic-area photo. At the weir, stay on public walking areas and keep children away from the reservoir edge. Check the current bushfire rating before driving into the hills, even if the city weather looks mild.
