South Beach is a good choice when you want the picnic to matter as much as the swim. The reserve has barbecues, a beachside café and public facilities, so you can settle in for a few hours without making every part of the outing about the sand.
It is also worth considering if your group needs beach mobility equipment or more substantial changing facilities. The City has completed new amenities here, including a Changing Places facility; older articles describing them only as a proposal are out of date.

A beach day with room for a picnic
The City's South Beach Reserve listing confirms the barbecues, toilets, showers and café. That combination works well for a group where some people want to swim and others prefer to sit on the foreshore.
Choose a meeting place before heading down to the sand and keep the picnic plan modest enough to carry back easily. Public barbecues are shared facilities; bringing something that does not need cooking gives you flexibility if one is occupied or unavailable.
Casual reserve use is free. Organised activities and events can require a booking, so check the City process before treating a large gathering, class or private function as an ordinary picnic.
Swimming at South Beach
South Beach is a coastal swimming beach, not a swimming pool. Check the water and current notices on arrival, supervise children closely and follow any instructions from beach staff. Do not assume that a group of people in the water means a patrol is operating.
Use SharkSmart's current alerts and the coastal forecast before leaving home. If red and yellow flags are operating, swim between them. The reserve and café still give you a worthwhile visit when conditions do not suit a swim.
If an enclosed swimming area is an essential part of your plan, check the separate seasonal arrangements at Bathers Beach or the current barrier information for Coogee Beach. Those facilities should not be attributed to South Beach.
New toilets and changing facilities
The City now lists completed public amenities with accessible toilets and showers, family and universal-access rooms, and a Changing Places facility. The latter provides additional space and equipment for people whose needs are not met by a standard accessible toilet.
Changing Places access uses an MLAK key. Eligible visitors can arrange their own key or enquire about borrowing one from South Beach Café during its opening hours. Confirm those hours and the key arrangements before you travel if access is essential to the visit.
The new amenities connect with paths from nearby accessible parking and the beach equipment storage area. That does not make every part of the reserve or beach suitable for every mobility aid; plan around the particular route you need.
Beach wheelchairs, walkers and matting
The City's disability access page lists free beach wheelchair and beach walker hire at South Beach, with bookings through the City's process. Check collection and return details as well as equipment suitability and the assistance the user will need.
Beach matting is seasonal, typically installed between November and March. Weather and maintenance can affect it, so do not rely on a summer photograph for a visit at another time of year. A booking enquiry is a good opportunity to confirm how far the current accessible route extends.
Getting there and choosing nearby beaches
Use South Beach Promenade in South Fremantle as your destination. Check the parking signs rather than assuming every surrounding bay has the same conditions. For public transport, use the Transperth JourneyPlanner for the exact entrance and your return time.
If travelling through central Fremantle, look at the City's road closures and major works before you set off. Allow room in the plan for a changed route without turning it into a race to the beach.
Dogs need their own planning: the reserve listing identifies on-leash use, and beach access depends on the designated area and signs. Do not assume the whole swimming beach is an off-leash area.
For a broader choice, compare Fremantle beaches. If you are heading farther south, our southern beaches guide links this visit with Coogee, Woodman Point and Rockingham.
Visitor information checked 25 September 2026. Confirm equipment bookings, key access and seasonal matting before travelling.
