Leighton Beach is a good place to consider when you want a longer stretch of sand close to Fremantle, with somewhere to have a picnic afterwards. The beach is in North Fremantle, near Port Beach, and its grassed reserve keeps the outing practical for people who would rather spend some of the day off the sand.
It also has documented beach wheelchair and walker hire. Those facilities are useful, but check collection arrangements and the seasonal matting before planning a visit around them.

A beach visit with room for a picnic
The City of Fremantle describes a grassed area a short walk back from the beach, with electric barbecues, tables and toilets. That makes it possible to split the day between the water and a proper break on land, instead of carrying every meal down to the sand.
Choose where to leave your picnic gear before heading for a swim. If several people are arriving separately, use an identifiable public entrance or reserve meeting point. A beach name alone covers too much ground to be a useful rendezvous.
Bring a rug as well as food if a picnic is the plan. Public facilities can be occupied, and a little flexibility is easier than building the day around one particular table. Nearby food outlets offer another option, but check their own opening hours rather than assuming every business will be serving after a late swim.
Swimming and time on the sand
Leighton is an ocean beach. Assess the conditions on arrival, look for the red and yellow flags and use the supervised swimming area when a patrol is operating. Do not extend that assumption to the entire beach, or to a time when flags have been taken down.
Beachsafe provides local beach information. Check SharkSmart and the coastal forecast as part of the decision to swim, rather than relying on a clear-water photograph taken on another day.
For a beach walk, decide on a comfortable return point before heading too far with children or heavy bags. Keep clear of dune fencing and use the designated accessways. If you stay for sunset, leave time to return to your transport while you can see the route clearly.
Beach wheelchair hire and matting
The City's current access page lists a Sandcruiser beach wheelchair and a beach walker available for free hire from The Orange Box Café. Arrange the equipment through the City's booking links and confirm the collection and return times. The published hours are tied to the café's operation, so they should be checked for the date you need.
Seasonal matting is normally installed during summer, typically November to March. A September visit should not be planned on the assumption that the mat is already down. Weather and maintenance can also affect access during the nominal season.
Tell the booking provider what assistance and route you need. Access to a reserve, access across sand and access into the water are different things; a suitable mobility aid for one part of the visit may not cover the whole trip.
Bringing a dog
The City permits dogs in designated areas at Leighton, rather than across every part of the beach. Read the local signs and use the City's current guidance before choosing an entrance with your dog. Keep leads and waste bags with you for the approach through public spaces.
If other people in the group want to swim, agree where everyone will meet afterwards. Choosing the correct dog area and choosing the patrolled swimming area may involve different parts of the shore.
Getting there and comparing nearby beaches
Use North Fremantle as the location when planning the trip, and check the final walk from your chosen stop in the Transperth JourneyPlanner. Drivers should follow current parking signs and avoid assuming all nearby café or apartment parking is public beach parking.
For a smaller beach combined with the West End, see Bathers Beach. For the jetty and swimming enclosure south of Fremantle, compare Coogee Beach. Our Fremantle beaches guide also explains where Port and South Beach fit into the choice.
