Gallery Central is a public exhibition space at North Metropolitan TAFE's Perth campus, at 12 Aberdeen Street. Admission is free. Its programme brings together professional artists, visiting practitioners and work by TAFE students, graduates and lecturers, with the focus changing from one exhibition to the next.
The usual published exhibition hours are Monday to Friday, 11am to 4.30pm. Check the current show before travelling, especially for a weekend or public-holiday visit. For a first look, allow around 30–60 minutes. That is a suggested visit length, with extra time for an artist talk or a closer look at the work.
Visitor information checked on 25 September 2026. All times are Perth local time (AWST).

What kind of gallery is it?
Gallery Central is part of North Metropolitan TAFE's School of Art and Design. Its exhibition programme includes work from beyond the college as well as student, graduate and staff projects. The gallery's educational role gives visitors a chance to see both finished work and the ideas, materials and processes behind it.
The programme includes temporary exhibitions, artist residencies, talks and other public events. Contemporary art, design and work by emerging artists are useful reasons to keep an eye on its listings. What you encounter depends on the show: there is no single selection of paintings or sculptures that this guide can promise will always be on display.
If you are choosing between several galleries, read the current exhibition description first. A show built around sculpture or public-art proposals offers a different visit from a photography exhibition or a graduate showcase.
Opening hours, free entry and bookings
The gallery's contact page gives exhibition hours of 11am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday, with Saturday opening varying by exhibition. Its exhibition information describes weekend opening as being by prior arrangement. Use the specific exhibition listing for your date; neither statement establishes a regular weekend walk-in schedule.
Visit Perth confirms that gallery admission is free. A talk, workshop or opening event may have its own attendance arrangements, so check the event details even when the exhibition itself is free.
Also check public holidays and the gaps between advertised exhibitions. Campus opening hours are not the same as gallery exhibition hours. For a group visit or a trip built around one particular show, contact the gallery before making firm plans.
Current and upcoming exhibitions
Programme update checked 16 October 2026: Wendy Robertson's exhibition and the 6 October talk have finished. Judith Forrest's THANKS, NO THANKS is listed for 16 to 29 October, with free entry and weekday opening from 11am to 4.30pm. Follow the individual links for changes and check the gallery's current exhibitions when planning a later visit.
Wendy Robertson: One Becomes Many Becomes One
Past exhibition: 4 September to 8 October 2026.
One Becomes Many Becomes One explores form, movement, light and shadow through fragile materials. Robertson uses black-and-white paper works and lightweight kinetic sculpture, developed from a practice of daily drawing. The materials and their relationship with the surrounding space are central to the exhibition.
An accompanying artist talk and question-and-answer session was advertised for Tuesday 6 October 2026, noon to 1pm, at Gallery Central, 12 Aberdeen Street. Check with the gallery about attendance arrangements.
Judith Forrest: THANKS, NO THANKS
16 to 29 October 2026. Published hours: Monday to Friday, 11am to 4.30pm. Free entry.
THANKS, NO THANKS looks at Forrest's public-art applications from 2000 to 2022, including successful and unsuccessful proposals. Drawings, sketchbooks, presentation material and small models show how an idea develops into a proposed public artwork.
This is a useful exhibition to consider if you are interested in the work behind public sculpture and commissions. The published venue is Gallery Central in Building 5 at 12 Aberdeen Street.
Finding the right exhibition space
Use 12 Aberdeen Street as your destination for Gallery Central. North Metropolitan TAFE's general Perth campus address is 25 Aberdeen Street, and its buildings occupy several nearby sites. The Perth campus page links to the campus map.
Some activities advertised through Gallery Central take place at the separate Shopfront Gallery, 149 Beaufort Street, or in other campus rooms. Read the venue line on the individual event listing before setting out. A Shopfront exhibition has its own location and opening arrangements.
Getting there and parking
Perth Station and Perth Busport are useful public-transport arrival points for the campus. Plan the final walk to 12 Aberdeen Street, rather than to the college's general address. Transperth's Journey Planner lets you enter the destination address, arrival time and walking preferences.
If your route passes through the Perth Cultural Centre, check the government's current precinct access information. Rejuvenation works are affecting routes through that precinct. Do not rely on older photographs to establish an open pedestrian path.
For drivers, North Metropolitan TAFE identifies nearby public parking as the practical option. The State Library car park is at 15 Francis Street. Check its current rates, opening hours, vehicle-height limit and accessible parking details before travelling. Do not assume campus parking is available for a gallery visit.
For taxis or rideshare, enter the gallery's street address and arrange a suitable drop-off. More transport options are covered in our getting around Perth guide.
Accessibility and visiting with children
The City of Perth's venue listing identifies wheelchair access. For information about the entrance, accessible toilets, seating or an assisted drop-off, call 08 9427 1318 or email the gallery before visiting. Check access separately if your event is at the Shopfront Gallery or in another campus room.
For a family visit, read the current exhibition description and ask about suitability for your children's ages. Activities vary with the programme, so plan around what is actually advertised. A short visit focused on a few works can be easier to manage than trying to see everything. Ask staff before touching an artwork or taking photographs, and follow any exhibition-specific signs.
Coffee and nearby places to visit
The campus page lists Aroma Café at 30 Aberdeen Street, with term-time opening. Check its current hours if you are relying on it for a break. Northbridge also gives you options for a meal before or after the exhibition.
Gallery Central can form one stop in a broader visit to the Perth Cultural Centre. Nearby choices include the Art Gallery of Western Australia and WA Museum Boola Bardip. Each has its own programme, hours and admission arrangements.
For a simple plan, visit Gallery Central during an advertised exhibition, take a food or coffee break, then choose one other cultural venue. Keep the order flexible around any booked event. Browse our Perth art galleries guide for more places to include.
